Meet some of the people making masks from home in support of COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Vanessa White has mostly been making masks for her family and for donations to various organizations, most recently to a school in Navajo Nation. If you want to send donations of handmade or store bought masks, sanitizer, etc. to Navajo Nation, send an email to Cassidy Zachary at hello@orendatribe.com and she will instruct you.

Rachel Jayson is a queer, black musician and maker. When she’s not conducting orchestras or playing viola in her band, Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys (@armyoftoys), she’s designing, sewing, and wearing colorful geometric outfits. Her style has been profiled by Boston Magazine, Qwear, and Dapperq. She is spending her quarantine away from her home, and luckily packed her sewing machine. For years, fans of her aesthetic have asked for a way to own a part of it, now that she is making masks, they can!

About the Masks-
All masks are cut and sewn exclusively by Rachel. They are made of 100% cotton and feature a dual-layer design that includes a pocket for a filer. The masks are fastened using nylon parachute cord, allowing for knots that don’t slip. The fabrics are African Wax Print Cotton, a durable, vibrant, and truly complex fabric. Because the patterns are so large and varied, every mask- even from the same fabric- is completely unique. Rachel carefully selects the placement for each part of the pattern pieces, ensuring an intentional layout for the final design. Each piece is finished with cord in a complimentary color.
Masks can be purchased through Rachel’s instagram page- @musykchyk by claiming one of the handful of completed masks posted on her “highlights” or by ordering a custom mask from her assortment of prints. $20 each or 3 for $50. Shipping is included. Altered sizes (smaller or larger) are available.

I’ve been sewing some in exchange for donations to Dignity Matters (dignity-matters.org) who work to end period poverty and support people in need with menstrual hygiene products. Their work is especially vital during these pandemic times! I will keep sewing and accepting donations for as long as my fabric stash lasts and there is a need for masks.
